Dagali Parish, located within Nore Prestegjeld in Buskerud County, includes the areas of Skurdalen and Tunhovd. From 1878 to 1895 almost 100 residents emigrated from the parish, the overwhelming majority to America. Some left with their families, others left by themselves. The emigration records are handwritten on printed forms. Usually each household entry is ended with the notation "Dateret" followed by a date, presumably the date when a certificate was issued for presentation at the emigrant's destination parish. In the original register, dates are recorded numerically day/month/year (e.g. 28/9 59). To avoid possible confusion, the extraction uses the written abbreviation for each month and gives the year in full (i.e. the date in the above example would be written "28 Sep 1859").
The original register sometimes uses the entry "do," ditto marks ("), or dashes (--) to duplicate the information above it. Again to avoid confusion, in the extraction the information duplicated is spelled out.
In the original register birth, baptism, confirmation and marriage dates are usually given. The abbreviations used are "f" for "født" (birth date), "d" for døbte" (baptism date), "Kong" for "Konfirmation" (confirmation date), and "agteviede," "ægestab," or "viede" for marriage date. These are a few references to a home baptism, "hjdöbt" or "hjdbt" for "hjemmedøbt." In the extraction, to avoid confusion, the dates are preceded by "born" for birth date, "bapt" for baptism date, "conf" for confirmation date, and "married" for marriage date. Note the use of the archaic "ö" instead of "ø" in many of the entries.
The spelling of each farm name is as it appears in the original register, which is often different from the modern spelling and the spelling in Oluf Rygh"s "Norske Gaardnavne."
When an entry was illegible or could not be read and understood a [?] appeals in the extraction. There were two years (1880 and 1891) with a notation "Ingen" ("None") after the year and no entries are recorded for these years. For the years 1893, 1894, and 1895 there are no entries at all, not even a notation of the year. The next page of the parish register begins with the year 1896, so there is a question as to whether there were no emigrants for the three years 1893 to 1895 (not likely) or the data are missing from the parish register (more likely).
